Aria and Emma jump for joy?

No hay bales for these girls!

On a lovely day for athletics, Aria Stavrakakis and Emma Cunningham competed at the Radley AC hosted open track and field meeting at Tilsley Park, Abingdon.

They both did the long jump, with Aria doing the 100m flat and 75 m Hurdles as well; Emma did the 800m also.

I had told Aria that I didn't mind how she did, as long as she beat her coach!

The girls have different strengths in the long jump, Aria having more speed and Emma more spring, so it was interesting to see them compete. You may not be surprised to know that there's a massive correlation between distance jumped and speed, and so it panned out with Aria jumping a foot further than Emma, despite the coach making a slight adjustment to Emma's run up half way through the competition! In the end Emma's best jump was her first one and Aria's was her third, which equals her coach's PB, so that's close.

However, in the 100m Aria got a sub-15 PB, which is a Level 5 England Arthletics PB award standard (out of 9), so really well done, Aria. She started very quickly leaving her coach (in the next lane) well behind and didn’t slow up. Beat coach at last!

In the 70m hurdles, Aria got too close to the first hurdle, due to the tailwind or just sprinting too hard at it, and that caused her to slow abrupltly, so she was a fair bit outside her PB. We'll get some proper stride length training done over the winter for her.

In the 800m Emma ran just outside her PB but there was a bit of a headwind in the back straight . Her performance is a fraction outside a Level 2 EA PB Award standard. She was finishing really quickly in the home straight, saying she wanted it to finish as quickly as possible! Well done Emma.

Their coach ran the 100m where his start wasn’t too good and didn’t really improve but still was second fastest of the year, so the training seems to be working; either that or thr strong tailwind!!!.

He also ran a 300m with two young ladies (U15 & U20, the younger of whom shot past him in the first 10m, probably due to having much lower wind resistance than him! He battled the other young lady down the home straight but lost out as his legs gave out.

It was a good day out for athletics and that was probably the last opportunity to compete outdoors until next spring. Now the winter training begins!
