Festive runs to end 2024

{This is the last weekly report of 2024. I will be away for 2 weeks but will catch up on results as soon as I’m back.}

Members were in action throughout the holiday period, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

On Christmas Eve, Keith Firkin ran a trail 10k in the grounds of Elstree school, no doubt encouraged by the mulled wine and mince pies for all finishers. Clearly in the trail mood, after a few days off, Keith also took on the longer (c. 12.5mi) "Plain Crazy" event on Sunday 29th on Warminster plain. Described as "hilly, cold, scenic, desolate, windy and maybe snowy" this race really knows how to advertise ;-) {Ed. - can something be both desolate and scenic?}.

Several parkruns operated on Christmas Day, with much bigger fields than usual. The nearest was at Tetbury where a record turnout saw plenty of fancy dress costumes on display including a good showing from club members –

Tetbury Parkrun Christmas Day 2024

Great to see Kate Kilby doing her first mile rehab run after months off with a recurrent foot problem, and Lorna Harris was very pleased with her first parkrun since January, accompanied by daughter Jo, having also been off injured. She’s hoping it was the start of a return to regular running.

On Boxing Day, although you won't see it in the official results, in rather foggy conditions 27 runners took part in an informal 5k starting from Oakridge Village Hall at 9am. The event has been going for about 10 years with members Paul and Sam Timms involved in the organising. They're shown below along with Nicola Wood. Mark our diaries for next year!

Also on Boxing Day, parkrun fanatic Phil Davey ran in Warsaw, having flown out especially. His 500th parkrun should be in 2025, but no news yet on where he will venture for that.

At the regular but muddy Cirencester on Saturday, the club had 5 of the top 10 age-graded finishers, including Kate Jacobs who was officially 1st lady home (just behind an unregistered lady) in 21:00. Keeping the team spirit going, several more of the ladies road racing team were “enjoying” the change of surface as you can see below.

Before Ciren Parkrun 28.12.24 Kate Jacobs, Wendy Jones, Corinne Clark, "Mrs Blue Skies"

First man home for the club after quite a while away from racing was Bill Leggate with in his own words “fairly consistent pacing but not particularly quick”. It was only his third parkrun, but it looks like his wife Kirsty was celebrating reaching her 50th milestone?

Finally, on Sunday
