The club's oldest record falls - to first-time marathoner

The Newport (Wales) marathon saw four club members including both men’s and ladies club captains in action.

Aaron Willis in his debut marathon felt the first half was controlled and he found a good group, but then found the last 10k hard (who doesn’t!). His training had gone well, and he was hoping for a 2:45, but that will have to wait until next time. Overall, Aaron was “fairly happy” – but given he has actually broken the late John Jameson’s 1988 club V40 record by just over a minute, the last record to stand from the 1980's, we hope he will upgrade that happiness status!! Great run Aaron - congratulations on the new record.

Kate Jacobs took almost 4 minutes off her previous PB (set in 2007) to finish as 6th lady and 1st FV45 in 3.07.27, which is also 6th in the club all-time ranking (provisional). Great run!

Jake Miles in one of his rare outings knocked just over 5 minutes off his MK time last yer to post the fastest marathon time this year by a member at 2.49.12 - quite possibly earning him a London place next year if he wants it.

Harrie Siebenaller-Weir had (by her own admission) desperately tried to give her place away with no luck so she ended up running. Sounds like a good call “Can see why people love Newport, 100% want to come back post a training plan ❣️country lane marathons are definitely my cup of tea ☕️”. Based on her first 18 miles today, with a training plan under her belt a sub 3:25 PB next time looks well within reach.

Lastly, Scott Mould completed what we believe to be his first marathon.

After an injury in January, Corinne Clark dropped down to the half, and whilst disappointed with her time still came 2nd in her age group, despite not feeling on top form.

Lastly, spare a thought for Charlotte Wilton who had been training well for Newport with Kate until she picked up an injury in the Fission 20m. Neverthless she still went along to support her mates – showing great team spirit.

Parkrun fanatic Phil Davey chose Paris for the course of his marathon swansong which he summarised as “a great experience which I never want to repeat”. Unaware he was being supported from afar by his Thursday morning running buddies, he reached halfway in 2.03, well inside a PB schedule, but finding the course far from flat, and with bright sun for the last 45 minutes he had to dig in to finish in 4.43. Good to see an emptied beer glass on your Strava roll Phil – cheers!

Charlie Clarke also enjoyed the day, finishing not far off his predicted 4.10. He reports “there were unbelievable numbers of runners and spectators, which created a fair amount of chaos. However, it was a cheaper means of seeing Paris attractions than an open top bus.”

Two members were also out on the roads on Sunday but over 10km. David Wright picked up yet another age-group win at Tidworth, and Dave Bell after umming and aahing {Ed. - is that how you write it?} decided to give the Lightning Bolt race in Chippenham a go –

“After an ankle injury and 3 weeks of not really training properly, I'll take that today 🙂. Goal was just to get round and try and run by feel. First half alright, second half not so pretty 🤦🏻‍♂️. In hindsight, I probably should have kept more of an eye on the pace in the first mile as second half was a painful struggle, and I felt like I was going backwards 😅. 4 weeks to try and get the fitness back up before Bristol half 🤞🏻”

Parkruns

At Cirencester, Rob Tuttle’s Strava post “Perfect conditions for a morning run - warm sunshine, firm ground and a lovely atmosphere” omitted that he was first home for the club in a course PB – congratulations Rob. He was only a few seconds ahead of new club Secretary Rich Allen who was running with his daughter Tilly. Congratulations also to junior Annabel Campbell who set a new course PB of 25.03

Andy Duff travelled a little further afield to the {course description}. His time of 20.22 would have been super-quick if the course was indeed as far as his English-speaking GPS measured, but nevertheless Andy is one of the most consistent parkrunners – 8 of his last 10 runs have been between 20.00 and 20.31 (with the other two in v poor conditions).
